New Year Trivia: The tradition of using a baby to signify the new year was begun
in Greece around 600 BC. It was their tradition at that time to celebrate their god of wine, Dionysus, by parading a baby in a basket, representing the annual rebirth of that god as the spirit of fertility. Early Egyptians also used a baby as a symbol of rebirth.

On this eve of a new year my one hope is that more will drink responsibly and not drive. This eve is the day and night so many die or are injured needlessly from alcohol related accidents. Be smart and live safely tonight so you can truly have a HAPPY NEW YEAR! If you do drink a bit much and wake up with that cotton mouth and headachy feeling, drink water, nothing more! No aspirin or bloody mary!!!! Alcohol dehydrates and therefore all your body needs is water and more water to re-hydrate and do away with the hangover! Adding chemical aspirin to your body taxes your poor liver making it harder to recuperate and you will be risking liver damage!

Fish Tips for Pregnant Women

ATLANTA (Ivanhoe Broadcast News) -- If you're pregnant or planning to be soon, it's important to eat a well-balanced diet. Seafood may sound like a good idea, but there are some tips you need to know about.

Lisa Harte is ready to have a baby. Not just one, but two. "I'm expecting twins. We're very excited, very excited to start our family and watch it grow."

She'll focus on safety when they're born, but for now, Harte takes care of herself and the twins by watching what she eats. That means cutting back on fish. "I only ate fish maybe once or twice a week anyhow, so maybe I cut down a little bit on my tuna salad sandwiches."

New research shows pregnant women, those trying to get pregnant and young children should avoid fish that contain high amounts of mercury.

Medical toxicologist Robert Geller, M.D., of Emory University in Atlanta, says, "Infants born to the people who have the very highest exposure of mercury are born with developmental abnormalities -- some of them can be born even with mental retardation of a very severe degree."

Dr. Geller recommends these tips to avoid mercury poisoning:

Avoid large fish such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel or tilefish.

Eat up to twelve ounces weekly of seafood low in mercury such as shrimp, Pollock or catfish.

Choose canned light tuna. Albacore and tuna steaks are higher in mercury.

Lisa still eats fish, but is careful in her selection. One day, her twins may also appreciate that extra caution.

The Christmas Fruit

This one fruit seems to make its appearance around Christmas time in more homes than usual. It might just be because they are coming into harvest or it has been passed down from generation to generation as the fruit to put in every child's stocking. Whatever the reason that they occupy a place of honor for this time of the year that orange ball is healthy, nutritious and a very enjoyable food.

An orange is more effective than dark-green, leafy vegetables in increasing serum concentrations of retinol and beta-carotene.

There are various types of oranges.

The orange has a sweet-sour taste and is commonly peeled and eaten fresh, or squeezed for its juice. The outer-most layer of the rind is called orange zest, and it has a similar flavor to the inner part of the orange. The rind is very high in nutrients and can be used in cooking, cleaning or eating. When the oil is removed from the orange rind it is a very effective non-toxic cleaning and polishing agent. Orange oil is used as a wood treatment for preserving and naturally beautifying it.

One naval orange provides 130% of your daily Vitamin C. This powerful antioxidant protects the body from the effects of stress, pollution and disease. Unlike some vitamins, Vitamin C cannot be stored by the body, so it must be replenished regularly. Oranges supply 80 fat-free calories packed with energizing carbohydrates that fuel energy levels.

Oranges supply Vitamin C, flavonoids and folate as well as fiber and many other vitamins and minerals that bolster the immune system and contribute to overall health, which is especially important during cold and flu season.

The fruit originated in India or Vietnam, depending on who you listen to. It was called na rangi in Sanskrit. The na rangi or naranja was translated as "norange", and in English usage a norange was back-formed into the more acceptable an orange. The same thing happened in French and Italian, but in Spanish it is still naranja.

A number of varieties of orange are now cultivated in many parts of the world, usually in warmer climates. The sweet navel orange - Citrus aurantium - was first grown in Spain, and has become the most popular variety. The sweet orange will grow to different sizes and colors due to local conditions, most commonly with ten slices inside. I have not bothered to count the segments inside an orange so maybe that's true and maybe not? I have more important things to do than count segments!

The Valencia or Murcia orange is one of the sweet oranges used for juice. It is a late-season fruit and is the most popular orange when the navel oranges are out of season.

The blood orange has streaks of red in the fruit, and when squeezed the juice is often reddish. The blood orange, with it's sweet, deep red colored flesh, is thought to be the result of a mutation that occurred in 17th century Sicily. In most varieties of blood orange even the pulp and skin is slightly sweet, and not bitter.
The mandarin is similar, but smaller and sweeter. The mandarin orange is considered a native of south-eastern Asia and the Philippines. It is most abundantly grown in Japan, southern China, India, Mexico and the East Indies, and is esteemed for home consumption in Australia. Mandarin is a group name for a class of oranges with thin, loose peel, which have been dubbed "kid-glove" oranges. These are treated as members of a distinct species, Citrus reticulata Blanco. The name "tangerine" could be applied as an alternate name to the whole group, but, in the trade, is usually confined to the types with red-orange skin. In the Philippines all mandarin oranges are called naranjita. Spanish-speaking people in the American tropics call them mandarina. There are a multitude of different named Mandarin oranges.

My grandchildren's favorite breakfast is

Orange French Toast;

Ingredients;
3 eggs beaten
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1/4 teaspoon orange zest
1/2 cup soy milk
1 Tablespoon melted Butter
6-8 Whole wheat bread slices

1) Beat first six ingredients together in bowl until well mixed.
2) Heat griddle.
3) Dip bread slices in mixture coating both sides.
4) Cook on butter coated or non-stick griddle until lightly browned. If you like your French toast slightly sweeter lightly sprinkle with powdered sugar. For a more cinnamon taste sprinkle with sugar and ground cinnamon before serving. (I keep a salt shaker with cinnamon/granulated sugar mixture on hand for this purpose. 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon to 1/4 cup sugar.)

Serve hot with fruit or syrup of choice. (Our favorite is sliced peaches or sliced strawberries or Mandarin Orange slices replacing the syrup) any one works well and tastes great without the sickening sweet syrup to throw the insulin pump out of kilter for hours.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away but so does an orange a day!

Ritalin And Cancer Risks

American Academy of Pediatrics Guidelines for Treating Behavioral Disorders in Children with Ritalin Ignores Evidence of Cancer Risks warns Samuel S. Epstein, M.D.

Based on an industry-funded multi-university trial on 282 pre-teen children treated with Ritalin for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), just published in Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed the use of the drug. However, the Academy ignores clear evidence of the drug's cancer risks of which parents, teachers and school nurses, besides most pediatricians and psychiatrists, still remain uninformed and unaware.

Some 40 years after the drug was first marketed by Ciba Geigy, carcinogenicity tests were conducted at the tax payer's expense by the National Toxicology Program, the results of which were published in 1995. Adult mice were fed Ritalin over a two-year period at dosages close to those prescribed to children. The mice developed a statistically significant incidence of liver abnormalities and tumors, including highly aggressive rare cancers known as hepatoblastomas. These findings are particularly disturbing as the tests were conducted on adult, rather than young mice which would be expected to be much more sensitive to carcinogenic effects. The National Toxicology Program concluded that Ritalin is a "possible human carcinogen," and recommended the need for further research. While still insisting that the drug is safe, the Food and Drug Administration admitted that these findings signal "carcinogenic potential," and required a statement to this effect in the drug's package insert. However, these inserts are not seen by parents or nurses.

The Physicians' Desk Reference admits evidence on the carcinogenicity of Ritalin, now manufactured by Novartis, qualified by the statement that "the significance of these results is unknown," apparently not recognizing that this is more alarming than reassuring. Apart from cancer risks, there is also suggestive evidence that Ritalin induces genetic damage in blood cells of Ritalin-treated children.

Concerns on Ritalin's cancer risk are more acute in view of the millions of children treated annually with the drug and the escalating incidence of childhood cancer, by some 35% over the last few decades, quite apart from delayed risks of cancer in adult life. These risks are compounded by the availability of alternative safe and effective procedures, notably behavior modification and biofeedback.

There is no justification for prescribing Ritalin, even by highly qualified pediatricians and psychiatrists, unless parents have been explicitly informed of the drug's cancer risks. Otherwise, prescribing Ritalin constitutes unarguable medical malpractice.
