Even though I work from home for myself, my children and a lot of friends do not, and I was angered to learn recently that the Department of Labor has published tips for employers on how to avoid paying workers for their overtime hours. Helping employers cut the paychecks that support working families should not be the role of any part of our government, much less the Labor Department!
Yes, I know that a lot of companies do know short cuts and use
them, but for crying out loud why waste government energy and
man hours on helping keep people poor? I hope you were outraged as well and will use your vote to stop the attack on overtime pay. Don't believe me take a look at it

Shark Liver Oil (Squalene) vs Cancer Cells!

Background: The development and potential application of cytoprotective agents that preferentially protect normal cells but not malignant cells from cytotoxic agents constitute a major therapeutic challenge.
We investigated the cytoprotective ability of squalene, an isoprenoid antioxidant against cisplatin induced bone marrow (BM) toxicity.
Methods: The growth inhibitory effect of squalene (squalene iP6, Isshogenki Corporation) against neuroblastoma cell line, SKNSH was tested in monolayer culture and colony formation in agarose. Flow cytometry and TUNNEL assay were done to characterize the growth inhibitory property of squalene.
Selective cytoprotection of squalene against cisplatin induced BM toxicity was tested using a human BM progenitor colony assay grown in a methylcellulose media (MethocultTM,GFH4434, Stem Cell Inc., BC, Canada). Data analysis was done by One Way ANOVA.
Results: Long term treatment of squalene (25-50 uM for 8 days) inhibited the growth of SKNSH cells by 20-35 % (P < 0.01). Exposure to squalene (12.5-50uM) for 10 days induced morphological changes in SKNSH cell line; large S type cells were seen to predominate the culture. Cell cycle analysis showed G0/G1 arrest in 25-50 uM dose range and TUNNEL assay showed 32% apoptosis in 50 uM treated group in SKNSH cell line. Squalene (50uM) also enhanced the residual cell killing ability of cisplatin in SKNSH cell line (p = 0.06443).
On the other hand squalene demonstrated BM protective effect against cisplatin-induced cytotoxicity. Squalene (25uM) protected 4 weeks old human bone marrow CFU-GM and CFU-BEMM colonies from cisplatin induced toxicity (see table).
Morphologically, squalene treated group revealed healthy and relatively bigger sized CFU-GEMM colonies compared to cisplatin treated group. In addition, squalene stimulated the total BM colony growth; 12.5 uM squalene increased the total BM colonies by 41.8 % (p= 0.001).
The above findings demonstrate that squalene has selective action in normal versus cancer cell that make it a potential candidate for cytoprotective therapy. Squalene may also be used to stimulate the bone marrow in a situation of marrow failure.
Ann's NOTE: This is excellent news. What this study demonstrates is that the action of cisplatin was enhanced in the cancer cells with the use of squalene, yet normal cells were protected from some of the adverse effects of chemotherapy.
More evidence that natural products may enhance conventional therapy (complementary medicine) without limiting its effects against cancer AND still protect the normal cells.

Find Your Niche

You went to all the trouble to develop a "Killer Ad Program",
tested response rates and heavily advertised your product,
service or opportunity, and then - nothing - no business. How
come, you might ask.
The object of the ads is really not to make an immediate sale,
but to get someone to do something - usually request more
particulars by email, or go to a web site for further
information. This is where many ad programs fall apart.
If you are trying to make sales from your web site, there must
be some continuity between the ad, and the web page they see.
Once in awhile an ad will get my attention, I go to their web
site, and can't find the information I was looking for. Trying
to fight my way through a dozen or so banner ads, that have
nothing to do with their offer, I quickly give up. If you are
going to have a web site to sell your opportunity, forget the
banner ads - they are simply a distraction.
A smart entrepreneur will make their ad and the web page
complementary with each other. If someone visits your site, they
should immediately find what brought them there in the first
place. They shouldn't have to search all over the place as they
will quickly lose interest. Remember that people came there to
get information, and not view graphics that bear no relation to
what they want.
While an image of an ocean view might be attractive, unless you
are selling a vacation package, forget about it. The page must
load quickly, and while large images will simply slow it down,
there should be some balance to make the page attractive. Many
of the web pages are simply "boring". People are looking for a
professional image.
Most people who buy on the web are not idiots. Just because your
ad is on the web doesn't give it any magic. If your product is
overpriced, you will not do a whole lot of business.
Someone recently told me that trying to run a web business was a
waste of time. Investigation into what he was trying to do,
quickly revealed he was selling a product for $49.95, that was
available in local stores for $19.95. In this case, he was
right. You should really not try to compete with a large company
or a "brick and mortar" business. The pockets that contain their
buying and advertising dollars are a lot deeper than yours.
But the Internet is a fantastic opportunity for the small
entrepreneur. You just don't want to try and compete with
"Walmart" in the process. Some people are making money every
single day however, so what is their secret? They have found a
"niche" not normally available in the chains, and are
capitalizing on that.
There are thousands of "niche markets" around. Take a look
around and see what others are doing. One good example I have
found is someone who has extended his "brick and mortar" business
to the Internet. Andrae, at <http://valuecarpetonline.com>
basically runs a specialty carpet store, and decided to go online
as well. His web site is complementary to his ads, and the user
can quickly find what they are looking for.
Do you have to have a "brick and mortar" business like Andrae?
No, in point of fact, the majority of people in business on the
web do not. In his case, it is an extension of his regular
business, that happens to work well. Many people however, do not
have a "brick and mortar" business, and operate solely on the
web.
Do you have a hobby that could be turned into a business. I know
a person who collects stamps. His hobby has turned into an
active business. Another person who is an avid gardener,

remedies. Yet another is an author who writes copy for other web
based businesses.
Time and space prohibit trying to list every opportunity that one
can pursue. What might be of interest to one person, may not be
to another. Everyone is different with different interests and
backgrounds. If you can find your proper "niche market", develop
some "killer ads" and have a complementary web site, you will
succeed.

Anti-Resolutions: What Not To Do

With time flying by faster and faster every year, you
already know it's important to make resolutions - or
set goals - to move you in the direction you want to
go in. However, it's equally important to know what
not to do.
Try these Anti-Resolutions to add some Don'ts to
your day, and see how it helps with all those Do's.
"I will not over-schedule my day."
It seems like scheduling every minute would be the
logical way to get everything done, but it actually
tends to work against you. Some things will take
longer than you expected, some things will interfere
that you can't predict. If you're scheduled to the
max, you'll have no room to absorb them, things will
overrun, and frustration will set in. Instead, plan in
the free time. Aim for about 75% scheduled, 25%
free.
"I will not say Yes to everything."
Saying Yes to everything is like cholesterol - it clogs
your day with stuff you don't want there. Doing other
people's work, answering annoying phone calls,
deleting junk emails. If you want to read a book, say
No to TV and the internet. If you want to start a
home business, say No to things that waste your time.
If you want to lose weight say No to Frito-Lay and
Sara Lee. Simple as that (I didn't say easy, I said
simple.)
"I will no longer put what I want at the moment over
what I want in the long run."
That extra 20 minutes of sleep in the morning might
seem like the best thing since sliced peanut butter, but
you know it will only make you late, and then playing
catch up the rest of the day. That new pair of shoes
may seem like the last pair you'll ever need, but if it
makes the rent money tight, it's not worth it. Think
about the long term effects of your actions today.
"I will no longer get duped into the "I can have it all"
idea."
Having it all is certainly possible, either by having it
at different times in your life, or by having a whole
lot of help (think Kelly Ripa or Katie Couric). Their
few spare minutes are certainly not spent grocery
shopping or cleaning toilets. So please, lose the
Super-Woman idea attached to it.
"I will no longer get trapped in media microwave
mentality."
Things take time. Life is not a sit-com, and few
things are resolved in 30 minutes or less. Appreciate
the various stages of projects and goals as well as the
outcome. Ever notice a rose in bud form? It's beauty
is special - no need to wait until the rose is opened to
enjoy it. Neither are your goals of home projects, or
getting a degree, or even getting your schedule
organized. Learn from the mistakes, learn to enjoy
the lessons, and make each day as special as the end
result.
"I won't give up."
Never give up. When you mess up, or when the wind
of life comes barreling in unannounced - and it will -
being prepared as best you can will give you the
strength to be able to move on. If you lose your job
suddenly, having a reserve of money will ease the
transition into a new job and give you the power to
wait to find the right one. When it seems like there's
no answer, push on. The answer may be just around
the next corner. Don't let fear, or anger, or
frustration, or your money, or your in-laws, stop you
from living your life. Keep going. It's your turn
next.
