FYI: AOL to Charge Extra for
Email In an effort to limit unwanted and fraudulent e-mail,
AOL announced plans to begin charging "postage" for
delivering some e-mail to their customers. Under the system,
companies that pay to have their e-mail delivered will
receive preferential service.
A third party, Goodmail, will collect the fees and verify
the source of messages. E-mail from nonpaying senders will
still be delivered, but it will be routed through spam
filters and other mechanisms, which could prevent it from
reaching its target. The hope is that the fees will
discourage spammers from sending billions of unsolicited
messages every day. A spokesperson from AOL compared the
plan to the current functioning of the postal system.
Certified mail, for example, is guaranteed to be delivered
"in a way that is different from other mail," he said.
Some analysts said e-mail postage will only lead to
disagreements between senders and ISPs. Many e-mail
marketers also rejected the idea, saying that there are
already mechanisms in place, such as a service called Bonded
Sender, that verify the legitimacy of e-mail and that cost
significantly less than the proposed charges.
Do what you must to be successful as
long as it's honest, something you enjoy and doesn't hurt
anyone.

Is Your Business Card Correct or Corrected? more about

Imagine how many business cards exchange hands every day.
Now, imagine how many of those cards have some kind of
correction on them; address scratched through, phone number
changed.
You wouldn't go into a business meeting with duck tape
holding your sleeve together, and you shouldn't hand out a
business card that is corrected instead of correct.
Business cards are the most underutilized and misunderstood
marketing tool in business. Many people spend the bucks for
cards and don't make an effort to get them into the hands of
those who can hire them or buy from them.
Compared to the other forms of marketing and advertising,
the mighty business card hardly makes a bump on the chart.
All the more reason for you to have thousands of miniature
billboards out there working for you night and day, not
stuck in a half-full box in a bottom drawer.
If you design your cards as a marketing tool and plan the
distribution, tossing unused cards in the trash should
become the exception rather than the rule. If one item on
your card changes, the cards are obsolete and should be
pitched.
Don't even think about using a business card with a black or
blue marker blotting out a line of type and a new name,
address or phone number written (or typed) above the black
line. Ugh!
Some even cut tiny strips of computer labels printed with
the new phonebook size type and stick them over the outdated
information to save a few bucks. How much are they really
saving?
Car dealers are famous for finding ways to save money on
business card expense. With the revolving door turnover of
salespeople, many dealers stopped ordering individual cards
for new hires. They print a master card with color dealer
logo and phone numbers and leave a big space in the middle
for the new salesperson's name to be penciled in. That way,
when the would-be fast-talking, glad-handing flannel mouth
doesn't work out, no new cards need be printed.

Take a look at that stack of business cards you have been
collecting for years and flip through them, you will see at
least one with a correction.
Your card says a lot about you. And if it is corrected, your
card is SHOUTING a lot about you.

Have you ever dreamed of getting paid to speak? Not sure
where to start? Wondering if you can make a living as a
speaker? Have people told you what a wonderful presence you
have in front of an audience?
If you are like many people you have a secret desire to
become a professional speaker, but you're just not sure
where to begin or what to do. As someone who has been
speaking professionally for many years I often recommend to
people who have the dream to start right where you are at.
Begin by speaking for free, work into a small fee, then a
bit more, then more and then more.
The type of response I get to this recommendation will
determine if someone has what it takes to become a
professional speaker. Note that I did not say public
speaker. Many people confuse professional speaker with
public speaker.
The main difference between a public speaker and a
professional speaker is the professional gets paid. Granted,
there will be times that professionals choose to not get
paid for an engagement, yet they do derive some, or all of
their income from speaking.
The profession of speaking can be one of the most rewarding
and lucrative you will ever have. On the other hand, it can
be one of the most frustrating. As with anything there are
pros and cons with this
career choice.
Being a professional goes beyond having a good, or even
great, speech. You must also have business savvy. Simply
put, you must know how to identify those people who want to
hear what you have to say; differentiate yourself in the
marketplace; market yourself; be able to sell your services;
give great customer service; deliver an stellar product
(you); and have great follow up.
An excellent way to find out more about the industry is to
visit your local chapter of the National Speakers
Association. There are chapters in cities throughout the
United States, Canada and other parts of the world. A quick
search on the Internet will give you a number and contact
person of your nearest NSA Chapter. You can even call the
corporate office which is located in Tempe, Arizona.
Before quitting your day job, take the time to develop your
presentation skills. Read a book, take a class or attend a
speaking seminar. Join an organization that assists you in
developing presentation skills such as Toastmasters
International. Consider hiring a presentation coach. Your
time and money will be well spent.
To determine what topics to speak on look to your own
experience, knowledge and passion. What do you have a great
deal of expertise in that people would want to hear about
and be willing to pay for?
The amount you get paid is based on skill and market demand.
A more seasoned speaker will likely make more than a new
speaker. A speaker with specific expertise that is not your
run of the mill type tends to command more than a
generalist. A speaker who is an author of a best selling
book also can command more than a non-published speaker.
There are many factors that are a part of the equation of a
successful professional speaker. Again, a great way to find
out what the determining criteria are is to find others who
are succeeding in the industry and learn what they have
done, are doing and plan to do in their career.
