Rejection is Not
Always Bad

Much of the "hype" concerning affiliate
programs centers on the anonymity of the
web, and that you won't have to have a
"face to
face" relationship with your potential
clients. Let the autoresponders do the
work, have the money deposited in your
bank account while you sleep, yatta,
yatta, yatta.
If you're in sales, and can't stand
"Rejection", you're in the wrong
business. Trying to market something
online, does not shelter you from this
either.
People may contact you and not buy into
your offer. Worse yet, you may not even
get any contacts. If this is happening,
you might want to ask yourself why.
Many people will simply "quit" and write
it off as a bad experience. Those who
succeed find out why.
The first axiom of marketing is that
people want to do business with people.
If their only contact is with an
affiliate page, that may or may not bear
your name, they will most likely "click
on by". Ask yourself - would you do
business with someone you never heard
of, know nothing about, and have no way
of contacting?
Letting people know about you is one of
the strongest statements you can make
about your business. If you give a short
background on yourself, with appropriate
contact information, they most likely
will have the necessary confidence to
proceed. You should have full contact
information on your website, including a
telephone number they can call in the
event of a question or a problem.
Now you might think that giving your
phone number to the world, is going to
result in a lot of "bad things". Not
true! In our 14 years of doing business
on the Internet, I have never had a
"crank" call - never. I post the hours
that people can call, and receive very
few calls outside of that time frame.
After hours, I turn on the voice mail,
give them the hours I'm available, and
point them to a form on our we site. I
use a broadcast type of message which
doesn't allow the caller to leave a
message. I do recommend a second line.
Now the majority of people will never
call, but will use the email channels
provided instead. The presence of a
telephone number however, goes a long
way in allaying their concerns. I don't
recommend an "800" number, as people
will think twice before spending their
own dime to make the call. I also give
a mailing address, and no, we haven't
been visited by "stalkers".
Another nice touch is to include your
photo with your Bio information. As
they say, "it's always nice to put a
face with a name". The more you can
establish a personal bond with your
potential buyer, the greater your
chances of success.
The second axiom of business is to learn
from your mistakes, and correct the
things that you are doing wrong. During
the Second World War, when a group of
young pilots in the RAF were fighting
for their lives in the air over England,
they would often be hit by enemy fire.
Their engine would start to misfire
causing it to
make knocking noises. Thus was coined
the phrase "every knock is one step
closer to home". They had a great
attitude.
We can take a lesson from them. If you
can determine why your offer is being
rejected by your potential clients, the
closer you will get to attaining your
goals. Rejection is common in business,
and even the largest companies do
studies on every ad campaign they
conduct to make them better.
A simple statement on your web page to
encourage feedback can go a long way,
but don't be discouraged by some of the
remarks you will receive. No matter how
crude some may be, they are being
triggered by something, so don't take
offense. Now while I normally advocate
the use of a form for sending
information from a website, here I do
not. Let them be automatically
transferred by use of the "mailto:"
command to their email account to write
the message, as you will then know the
return address is valid.
Yes, they may wish to remain anonymous
as well, but the use of a form in this
instance, which simply allows them to
vent, will serve little purpose. You
really don't want to be influenced by
some bored grade school child with
nothing better to do.
Follow up to all the legitimate replies
you receive to find out why they have
reservations. Just this process alone
may swing them into your camp. Rejection
is not always bad, and if you learn from
your mistakes, it just may prove to be a
positive factor.

WASHINGTON, March 5 - Federal
election commissioners are
preparing to consider how
revamped campaign finance laws
apply to political activity on
the Internet, including online
advertising, fund-raising e-mail
messages and Web logs.
Anyone who decides to "set up a
blog, send out mass e-mails, any
kind of activity that can be
done on the Internet" could be
subject to Federal Election
Commission regulation, Bradley
A. Smith, a Republican
commissioner, said in an
interview posted Thursday on the
technology news site Cnet.com.
"It becomes a really complex
issue that would strike deep
into the heart of the Internet
and the bloggers who are writing
out there today," said Mr.
Smith, who opposed regulating
Internet activity when the
commission originally addressed
it in 2002.
But it is unclear how much
appetite the F.E.C., criticized
in the past by advocates for
election reform as being
dysfunctional and ineffective,
really has for trying to govern
Internet activity. In interviews
on Thursday, several
commissioners warned about the
complexities of trying to assign
a dollar value to online
campaign activity and said they
hoped any new regulations would
not stifle personal political
involvement.
"People should not be alarmed,"
said Ellen L. Weintraub, a
Democratic commissioner.
"Given the impact of the
Internet," Ms. Weintraub said,
"I think we have to take a look
at whether there are aspects of
that that ought to be subject to
the regulations. But again, I
don't want this issue to get
overblown. Because I really
don't think, at the end of the
day, this commission is going to
do anything that affects what
somebody sitting at home, on
their home computer, does."
After the McCain-Feingold
campaign finance law was passed
in March 2002, the F.E.C., which
is in charge of its enforcement,
issued extensive rules to
accommodate the law's
provisions, including a blanket
exemption for all Internet
activity. But a federal judge
ruled last year that many of the
F.E.C. rules were too lax and
specifically asked it to address
the question of Internet
activity.
Although the F.E.C. appealed
several elements of the judge's
ruling, the Internet provision
was not among them, which means
it must now address it.
"I don't know how we get out of
it at this point," said David M.
Mason, a Republican
commissioner. "We have a ruling
ordering us to go back and
define a rule."
The six-member commission is
divided evenly between Democrats
and Republicans; their vote not
to appeal the part of the
judge's ruling dealing with
Internet activity broke along
party lines, with Democrats
voting not to appeal.
Commissioners said they could
consider several questions,
including whether political Web
sites are technically
coordinating with official
campaigns by posting links to a
candidate's Web site, and
whether partisan bloggers are
making in-kind contributions by
donating their expertise and
computer equipment to a
campaign.
By law, contributions over
$1,000 or services of an
equivalent value must be made
public. Individuals are
permitted to volunteer their
time, and there is an exemption
for newspapers, broadcast
networks, magazines and other
periodicals. It is unclear
whether political news sites
would meet the exemption
requirements for the news media,
or whether the F.E.C. would go
beyond regulating simple
Internet advertisements bought
by the campaigns.
In an interview, Mr. Smith said
he did not believe that the
judge's ruling limited the F.E.C.
to regulating only paid
advertising on the Internet.
"In theory, there's no reason
why everything that goes on a
blog advocating a candidate
wouldn't be an independent
expenditure and subject to
regulation," Mr. Smith said.
But Ms. Weintraub cautioned
against jumping to conclusions,
saying the goal was simply to
address the Internet in some
way. "We are looking at whether
there is something short of a
complete exemption for Internet
activity," she said.
"One really good question that
needs to be asked is, 'How do
you value this stuff?' " she
said. "Because we only track
money - campaign money that
people spend on campaigns - not
their thoughts or their beliefs
or their statements. Just when
they spend money. So if
something is done really
cheaply, it's not going to rise
to the level where it will meet
our regulations anyway."
The Republican commissioners
interviewed agreed that it would
be difficult to place a value on
most political activity
conducted online, and thus to
determine whether it fell under
the campaign contribution
limits. "If you have a very
successful blogger who attracts
a lot of attention based on the
commentary he or she is
undertaking, and maybe that
activity is coordinated with a
candidate, what is the value of
that?" said Michael E. Toner,
the third Republican member of
the commission.
"Everyone here believes this is
one of the most important
rule-makings the F.E.C. is going
to do this year," Mr. Toner
added, "mainly because the
Internet got millions of people
involved in politics. What we do
here is going to have a major
consequence of how people are
involved."
